ABOUT US
Our mission is to provide children from families in need with opportunities to create meaningful memories with their loved ones. This is done through fun activities and events. We recognize that many young children are affected by their parents facing unexpected financial burdens. This prevents them from enjoying simple pleasures like a day out at the zoo,a trip to the water park, or even a night out at the movies. Our aim is to give these children a chance to enjoy their childhood, and just be kids.
Our Misson
History & Background
JDRI Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in 2023 by Jason DesRivieres, a veteran of the Ottawa construction industry with nearly 20 years' experience. Through his work in the industry, Jason recognized the potential for construction companies to make a positive impact in their communities. He saw the need for supporting families with young children who may be in need. With this vision in mind, he began laying the groundwork for the JDRI Foundation in 2022, compiling ideas to help make his vision a reality.
Why?
The children that we aim to serve are those who are affected by unexpectedly financially stressed parents. These parents may not have access to the same support as those who meet the criteria for government funding in Ontario.
These parents could be facing financial difficulties due to unexpected circumstances including divorce, job loss, bankruptcy, or a death in the family such as a main financial provider of the household. This, by extension, effects the young children within these families. These families face a range of social and economic challenges that can make it difficult for them to provide their children with enjoyable experiences and create lasting memories. Some of the social and economic challenges that these families face include:
-
Limited access to recreational activities: Families who are struggling financially often cannot afford to participate in recreational activities with their children such as visiting a zoo, amusement park or water park. This can impact children who may miss out on experiences that are important for their growth and development.
-
Lack of family time: Financial difficulties can also lead to long work hours and multiple jobs, making it difficult for parents to spend quality time with their children. This can have a negative impact on the emotional wellbeing of these children.
-
Isolation: Families who are struggling financially may also feel isolated from their community, which can lead to feelings of loneliness and a lack of social support.
Statistics and data show that unexpected financial burdens are a significant issue for many families in Ontario.
In 2019, over 2.2 million people in Ontario experienced some form of financial difficulty due to unexpected circumstances, such as job loss or illness. Additionally, in 2020, over 34,000 Ontarians filed for personal bankruptcy or proposal.
These families may not qualify for government support but still struggle to make ends meet. Therefore, by extension, can not provide their children with any experiences that go beyond basic needs.
How?
Our program aims to provide these children with access to recreational activities and create opportunities for them to enjoy their childhood.
The impact of our program can be significant. By providing families with the support they need to create lasting memories and strengthen family bonds, we hope to improve the overall wellbeing of these children. This can have a ripple effect on the wider community, leading to happier and healthier communities. By serving families who do not meet the criteria for government funding, we aim to fill a gap in the social safety net and provide support to the children who need it the most.
